How take-home pay is calculated
Your take-home pay is what reaches your bank account after deductions. For most employees in 2026/27 the steps are:
- Personal Allowance. The first £12,570 of income is tax-free (tax code 1257L). Above £100,000 the allowance shrinks by £1 for every £2 earned.
- Income tax. Income above the allowance is taxed in bands: 20% up to £50,270, then 40%, then 45% on the highest incomes. Scotland has its own bands.
- National Insurance. 8% on earnings between £12,570 and £50,270, then 2% above.
- Pension and student loan. Pension contributions and student loan repayments come off too, depending on your scheme and plan. Salary sacrifice reduces the pay you are taxed on.
The calculator works on a yearly basis, like most UK salary calculators, then divides by 12 for monthly figures and by 52 for weekly ones. Your payslips can differ slightly from month to month.

Frequently asked questions
How is take-home pay calculated?
We take your gross pay, remove any salary sacrifice and pension, then deduct income tax, National Insurance and any student loan, using the official 2026/27 rates and thresholds. What is left is your take-home pay.
What is the Personal Allowance for 2026/27?
The standard Personal Allowance is £12,570. It goes down by £1 for every £2 of adjusted net income over £100,000, so it is zero at £125,140.
How much National Insurance do employees pay?
Employees pay 8% on earnings between £12,570 and £50,270 a year, and 2% on earnings above that.
What is the 60% tax trap?
Between £100,000 and £125,140 you lose part of your Personal Allowance as your income rises, so each extra pound is taxed at an effective 60% plus National Insurance. Pension contributions can bring your income back below £100,000.
How much is £30,000 after tax?
On a £30,000 salary in 2026/27 you take home £2,093.30 a month (£25,120 a year), assuming the standard tax code, no pension and no student loan, in England, Wales or Northern Ireland.
